Revolvers Aren't Just For Cowboys!

I added another facet to my competitive shooting resume this past weekend by participating in my first ICORE match. I love shooting revolvers and have done very well with them in bullseye style leagues. This particular match combines the styles I am accustomed to shooting, bullseye, action pistol and practical pistol. It's scored on accuracy and time. Necessary equipment includes: revolver, belt and holster and some form of quick reloading devices. There are several stages all of different courses of fire, some are shot from a stationary position at multiple targets and some involve moving from station to station to engage all the targets.

An audible buzzer sounds and you draw your revolver and focus in on your first target engaging it with multiple rounds before moving to your second and third target. After a quick reload involving opening your revolver's cylinder and ejecting the spent casings from it you reach for your belt and grab a loader full of fresh cartridges and drop them into the cylinder. Smoothly closing the cylinder and reacquiring your grip you bring the revolver's sights back up onto your next target and continue though the stage until all targets have been engaged. Twenty to thirty seconds later ten targets have been hit with multiple rounds and the range officer asks you to unload remaining cartridges from your revolver, show them that the gun is clear and reholster your firearm. Scoring begins by checking your time and the targets for points.

In the aftermath you think how things could have gone better. Was your draw quick and smooth? Were you able to get your sights on target quickly and accurately? Did your reloads go smoothly and were they timed appropriately? And so the checklist of skills goes on. These are the things to take back to the range for practice so you can improve for the next match and so you can advance your shooting skills all around.

ICORE matches focus on shooting with a revolver but some matches do allow you to shoot with a semi automatic pistol. I prefer USPSA matches for semi automatic pistols or even IDPA matches for semi auto with a more defensive style of shooting.
