5 Ways Shooting is Similar to Golf

In both golf and the shooting sports our goal is to be able to hit a small target and do it repeatedly time after time. Both sports involve very specific movements and coordination to be good and with practice comes proficiency. Whether at the firing range or the driving range we practice the same shot over and over again.

As the golfer approaches their tee shot on a par 5 hole the shooter may opt to practice their long range shot with a high caliber rifle with scope adjusted to see a target several hundred yards away. Instead of a ball resting on a raised tee the shooter may use a bench to position themselves and the rifle for their shot. Wind and weather can raise havoc on either athlete and cause their shot to be drastically off the mark. Any irregular movement of the body can also throw their shot off target to their dismay.

A fairway shot can be likened to a shorter rifle shot. An iron in the golfers hand translates to a small bore, maybe a rimfire rifle, in the shooters hands. Hitting the green becomes the goal of the golfer and shooting center bullseye is the goal of the shooter.

To be off the mark with this shot would leave a chip shot onto the green with a wedge or for the shooter a long pistol shot to hit the mark. As the golfer must practice his different shots so to must the shooter practice with different firearms to make their shot count.

After reaching the green the golfer changes to yet another club, their putter. Similarly, a shooter may practice close quarter shots within yards of their target. The goal of both athletes is to knock it into the very center of their target and walk away satisfied that all their practice has paid off.

As a lover of outdoor activities I can attest that these two sports can be very frustrating and extremely satisfying at the same time. Practice and training is key to staying on the path to improvement. Smart practice and training will assist in making the travels down that path easier and even more rewarding.

Happy Safe Shooting!
